Another innocent victim at Penn State

I am a proud Penn State alum. I went there for my undergraduate and graduate school and this university taught me the best principles of integrity, honesty, and community service. At Penn State, we were always taught to do the right thing. So, I was shocked when the recent media frenzy unleashed the news of horrors that happened at Penn State in the Sandousky case.

What makes this worse is the heartbreaking way in which Penn State addressed this issue. I wish we would make this about getting justice for innocent children and punishing the criminal, the people who hid this information, and even the 28-year-old who did not help the victim upon seeing the incident, didn’t call the police, and waited for a day to inform anyone. Joe Paterno was only informed about the incident and immediately notified his superiors. He is the only one who followed protocol. The goal of this should be to get justice, but our media made just another victim in this case. Heartbreaking.

The athletic director and the VP get to "step down". The 28-year-old who saw the event and never called the police, never helped the child, and did not know better to inform people immediately is still coaching. The only man who did something and followed the university protocol of escalating the issue is fired. The decision led by the drama-hungry media and the board of trustees just used Joe Paterno as a scapegoat to show that they made a huge change.

Penn State students are hurt not because it is about football but because this is about principle. The graduate assistant who witnessed the event did not intervene, call the police, or alert anyone but his supervisor and is deemed to be compliant with appropriate protocol. Paterno, who alerted his superiors and the university police is somehow in the wrong. The focus should be to fight for the victims, not fight to make more victims.

The grace with which Paterno accepted the decision is remarkable. We just added another victim to this case, and while he may never get justice, I hope the kids do.
